Andrew Garfield to star in ‘Spider-Man’ reboot – wait, who?

Sony Pictures announced Thursday on its Twitter stream that Andrew Garfield has been cast in the role of a teenage Peter Parker in its rebooted Spider-Man franchise.

The 26-year-old U.S.-born and British-raised actor’s credits are pretty thin when compared against those of his web-slinging predecessor, Tobey Maguire. Garfield appeared in last year’s Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus and will appear later this fall in The Social Network, a docu-drama about the creation of Facebook.

Not much else, but the bulk of his career is still ahead of him — and playing one of the world’s most popular superheroes is a good place to start.

“Though his name may be new to many, those who know this young actor’s work understand his extraordinary talents,” director Marc Webb told AP. “He has a rare combination of intelligence, wit, and humanity. Mark my words, you will love Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker.”

Of course, because this is Nerdvana, there has to be a Doctor Who tie-in somehow, doesn’t there? And here it is: Garfield  played the scrappy Tennessee boy Frank in the 2007 episodes “Daleks in Manhattan” and “Evolution of the Daleks.”
