If it’s Valentine’s weekend then it’s time once again celebrate your love… of comics! The 2016 Amazing Arizona Comic Con will be at the downtown Phoenix Convention Center from February 12 – 14, where, among thousands of potential Valentine gifts, you can pick up that Rob Liefeld autographed ‘Deadpool’ art print your significant other has been clamoring for – and maybe get a picture with the legendary comic creator to boot.
If you’re a fan of Marvel Comics’ irreverent “Merc with a mouth,” Deadpool, then this year’s convention couldn’t be timed more perfectly. Not only does the character’s solo feature film debut the same day as the con’s opening, you can actually attend a special screening of the flick with the hero’s creator, Rob Liefeld.
If you are excited for the other upcoming Marvel Studios film, Captain America: Civil War, the Amazing Arizona convention is also bringing you Steve McNiven, the illustrator of the comic book story on which the movie is based. The artist is also well known for his work on Marvel mainstay titles like Guardians of the Galaxy, Wolverine and Inhumans.
Additional special guests include: classic Star Wars and Tarzan artist, Rick Hoberg; legendary X-Men author, Chris Claremont; Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles creator, Kevin Eastman; Harley Quinn artist, Chad Hardin; Crisis on Infinite Earths illustrator, George Perez and many other renowned comic authors and artists.
For cosplayers and costume enthusiasts the convention will be holding an “Amazing Geek Fashion Show” on Saturday and a “kids’ costume parade” on Sunday. Need a colorful outfit for the occasion? There will be plenty of costume designers exhibiting, like Arizona’s imaginative Modifiedminds and Torture Couture, who can help you out. (You can find Modifiedminds and Torture Couture at booth #A36.)
Amazing Arizona Comic Con has become known as the convention for ‘real’ comic book lovers, or as popular local creator Shelby Robertson puts it, “‘Amazing’ definitely has the most emphasis on comic books and the creative forces behind them.”
“This show tends to be the one in Arizona where I have the largest fan base, and being so close to the new year, each year, it’s a good kickoff for my convention season,” continued Shelby. “I also really like the way the show is run. They have a great staff every year and I can’t really hope for more than that when rolling into any show.” (You can find Shelby Robertson at booth #316.)
Kids 10 and under can enter free all weekend with a paid adult admission. Some convention special events require additional fees.
