I’m not a big one for New Year’s resolutions, but I am a big man and I’m not getting any younger, so I really should make it to the gym more often. Or just get up from my various desks once in a while.
I’ve been pouring a lot of myself into my work over the last couple years, and while largely satisfying, it certainly takes a toll. I’m resolving to get back into gaming in a significant way – console and tabletop.
The holiday haul in my house has already gone a long way toward inspiring this — Santa brought me the Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds golden Nintendo 3DS XL bundle (finally getting some serious use after several days of being bricked by the eShop debacle), and Super Mario 3D World and Disney Infinity also landed at my house.
Those last two Wii U titles especially are a great way to unwind each evening and spend some quality time with my 9-year-old son — more good resolution fodder, too. Infinity is a cash grab (my wallet is still steaming, and with Sorcerer Mickey and Phineas and Agent P. on preorder, we’re not done yet), but it’s also loads of fun and appeals to my needs for sandboxing and exploration, and to cultivate those in my offspring.
Also, Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag has been calling my name from store shelves lately… And of course I’m excited for the 40th anniversary of Dungeons & Dragons, the granddaddy of all roleplaying games, and the new edition that this coming summer will bring. My son also enjoys Magic: The Gathering, and I’m hoping that will translate well into D&D one day.
What’s your resolution, gaming or otherwise? Or, if you don’t believe in them, what’s your 2014 goal or master plan?
My resolution is not to spend all my cash on Infinity. I’ve been trying to introduce gaming to my little ones and this has been the best by far – they love it – but yeesh, things are going to get pricey if I can’t curb my completist tendencies.
