Fun Find Fridays is my series on the strange comic book related paraphernalia I’ve found at comic book shows, antique shops, swap meets, or buried in my closet.

In Return of the Asthma Monster . . . well, the Asthma Monster returns! I was delighted to find this comic at Bookman’s; I’ve read its predecessor, in which the Asthma Monster (don’t worry, he’s just some guy in a costume) attacks a school with his aller-gun. Captain America saves the day, with the help of two kids immune to the aller-gun’s effects because they took their asthma medication. In this issue, the Asthma Monster seeks his revenge, with the help of a little mutant Allergen Gang. The potential for campiness is very high, but the story has an edge, because the Asthma Monster actually kidnaps the children’s parents. In the end — well, I won’t spoil it for you, only to say I was happy this wasn’t your typical, “I’ll get you next time!” resolution.

What’s especially interesting about this comic is the art of Mark Bagley, who has since risen to fame with runs on Amazing Spider-man, Ultimate Spider-man, Avengers Assemble, and now Fantastic Four. This issue was published in 1989, so it’s a great look at the beginning of a superstar’s career.

Of course, it’s also a great reminder to visit your doctor regularly.
