Del Rey springed a surprise on Star Wars books fans Wednesday: Timothy Zahn’s story of Imperial palace intrigue will continue with Thrawn: Treason, releasing in hardcover format and ebook the summer of 2019.
“Set before the finale of Rebels, Thrawn’s Imperial loyalty is tested, he crosses paths with Orson Krennic, and his protégé Eli Vanto returns with dire warnings about Thrawn’s homeworld.”
As seen on TV’s Star Wars Rebels, Krennic, the director of the Death Star project in the movie Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, has been competing for resources with Grand Admiral Thrawn’s TIE Defender program.
The character of Thrawn was created by Timothy Zahn for his 1991 novel Heir to the Empire, which kick-started a Star Wars publishing boom that lasted until Disney bought Lucasfilm and pushed the reset button on the expansive canon of novels, comics and games. He re-entered canon in Rebels’ third season and Zahn’s novel Thrawn and its direct sequel Thrawn: Alliances, which explored both the cunning strategist’s relationships with Jedi Knight Anakin Skywalker in the Clone Wars era and Darth Vader during the height of the Empire amid the stirrings of galactic Rebellion.
