Talk like a pirate, feel like a hero

Arrrrrr you ready for this?

The Arizona Browncoats and the Arizona Corsairs will present a sci-fi pirate-themed film festival noon to 7 p.m. Sept. 19 to mark Talk Like a Pirate Day — and raise some money for local and international charities.

The event, “Can’t Stop the Space Pirates,” is sponsored by Bookmans Entertainment Exchange and hosted and sponsored by MADCAP Theaters in Tempe. Kicking off with local comedy-punk band Thunder Stump, the program consists of a screening of the 1984 flick Ice Pirates, followed by swordfighting and belly dancing demonstrations by the Arizona Corsairs. Then, Joss Whedon’s loyal Browncoats will present the filmmaker’s Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog and Serenity, part of the annual “Can’t Stop the Serenity” events held by fans of the short-lived Whedon TV series Firefly.

The event wraps up with the haunting melodies of San Francisco steampunk-cellist Unwoman.

Locally, Can’t Stop The Space Pirates will raise money for Equality Now, a charity that supports the rights of women and girls worldwide, and The Phoenix Children’s hospital through ticket sales, prize drawings, and merchandise. Tickets are currently on-sale at for $17 (includes a $2 service fee).

MADCAP is at 730 S. Mill Ave., Tempe.
