It was announced last month that the former owners of The Royale Cinema, Andrea Beesley (the Midnite Movie Mamacita) and Jeremiah Wilkerson, were continuing their involvement in the local cult movie scene by creating a new “Horror Host” cult-cinema showcase in the tradition of the Elvira and Svengoolie shows. Their new production makes its debut at 7 p.m. Friday, July 6, at the Phoenix Art Museum as “Dr. Diabolic’s Traveling Roadshow & Fun-time Variety Hour” and promises an inter-dimensional transportation mechanism full of maniacal fun.

The cult-cinema entrepreneurs have been staples of the Valley film scene since 2006 and they have been teasing us with the characters of Dr. Diabolic (Wilkerson) and Nurse Narcotica (Beesley) by appearing at the 2012 Phoenix Comicon and as judges of the recent Zombie Bikini Contest in downtown Mesa. Read more about this devious duo’s origin here.

The Dr. Diabolic variety show will be emceed by Dr. Diabolic and Nurse Narcotica and for their debut event this Friday they will be joining forces with other local performance artists for show segments that include the following:

  • Dr. Diabolic's Traveling Roadshow & Fun-time Variety HourThe Crimson Ghost Enjoy the latest episode of this 1940s film serial. A criminal mastermind known as The Crimson Ghost (the skull logo used by The Misfits band) is out to steal a device called the Cyclotrode, which can short-circuit all electrical current on the planet. It will be presented by Dr. Diabolic and Nurse Narcotica with additional live antics and theatrics.
  • Becky B – The Local drag queen movie hostess whose beauty will blend in well with the Phoenix Art Museum’s artwork, and whose witty sarcasm is “par excellence!” Verging on NSFW, she’s the perfect addition to this freak show and will perform her signature live comedy routine and stand-up.
  • Galapagos Improvisation – Devoted to performing long-form improvisation based in strong ensemble work, with characters and scenes rooted in truth. Whatever the specific form is, a single audience suggestion serves to inspire their exploration. Galapagos are based out of the Torch Theatre.
  • PUGS (Phoenix Ultimate Geek Smackdown) – The Ultimate Geek should be able to debate any topic on either side. During PUGS two people discuss a random topic and see who emerges on top by vote of the audience. Neither contestant knows which side they will be debating, but they can expect topics like, ‘Who has bigger daddy issues, Luke Skywalker or Batman?’ Presented by Jeff Moriarty (Ignite Phoenix) and Jonathan Simon (Lightning Octopus).

Although they are busily plotting the destruction of mankind, the good doctor and his nefarious nurse assistant took some time away from their planetary imprisonment plans to answer a few questions about their malicious machinations and upcoming undertakings.

Let’s cut right to the chase. The Government Safety and Hazard Investigation Board recently held you [Dr. Diabolic] in contempt for failing to provide documents regarding your recent Dimensional Resonator accident. What are you hiding and should the American public be concerned?

[DD] The GSHIB (we need to get them a new acronym) has been on my lab coattails for years. Once again, they don’t have anything substantial against me so they turn to permits. Simply put, we are hiding nothing (in this dimension) and the American public should not be worried about a huge, unlicensed nuclear tachyon amplifier. But the other side of that door might be a different story.

Nurse Narcotica & Dr. DiabolicThere have been rumors that during this election year, Dr. Diabolic is planning to run as a third party candidate with the World Domination Party. Is this true and if so, will [Nurse Narcotica] be your running mate?

[DD] Well, the thing about World Domination is that it’s not quite as fun if it’s not taken by force. Also, the 1% is doing a fine job of softening everything up. So not now, but maybe in 2016; and I’m just not sure if America is ready for a Nurse Narcotica in the White House. You know – a cyclops.

[NN] The Doctor’s lack of faith in my running-mate abilities comes as no surprise.  He is constantly undermining my future advancements; of course I would be his running mate!

Many believe that the record heat the Valley is experiencing this summer is a direct result of one of your secret experiments and a deliberate plan to destroy life as we know it. Is this true?

[DD] Unfortunately, I can’t claim it. My machine had rather unexpected results. It’s probably either CobraTech or just good old-fashioned global warming.

Some people call you mentally ill, unstable and emotionally different, but you prefer the terms ‘crazy’ and ‘mad’ when describing yourself. Do you believe yourself to be insane?

[DD] Crazy people don’t think they’re crazy. I just want to use the plots of movies to enslave most – all – of the human race. Is that so crazy?

You allegedly received a doctorate in Mad Science and you are well renowned in that field. Of all the potential scientific disciplines to major in, why did you choose this one?

[DD] I think mad science just made sense. It fit my plans for world domination, it’s something I enjoy, and I qualified for financial aid so that was a plus.

Dr. Diabolic's Traveling Roadshow & Fun-time Variety HourNurse Narcotica, you wear an eye-patch and many have speculated that your eye-accident was the result of one of Dr. Diabolic’s experiments gone awry. Others say this was not an accident at all, but that your eye was replaced with a cybernetic laser device of some type. What is the truth?

[DD] No comment.

[NN] The Doctor is fond is utilizing me for his experiments.  I won’t go as far as to say how it happened, but he was definitely involved and he is currently working on a top secret replacement device.

As part of your debut show at the Phoenix Art Museum on July 6, you will be hosting a PUGS (Phoenix Ultimate Geek Smackdown) event. I’d like to present a PUGS topic to challenge the two of you – Best Mad Scientist: Dr. Frankenstein or Herbert West? We’ll let Nerdvana readers select the winner with their comments.

[DD] I’ll take point on this one. Herbert West. He didn’t run from his horrible creations. He tackled them head on – and brilliantly. How? With even more of the re-agent that brought them back to life – a true master of his craft.

[NN] I would have to go with fellow Dr. Frankenstein, although he’s not German, he is at least European.

Post your comments to let us know who you think is the ‘Best Mad Scientist’ and plan to see Dr. Diabolic’s Traveling Roadshow & Fun-time Variety Hour on July 6 at 7 p.m. during First Friday at the Phoenix Art Museum’s Whiteman Hall. Museum admission is complimentary, but tickets to the variety show are $10 and will be available at the entrance to Whiteman Hall, or you can purchase theme online here. The variety show event is open to all ages and

The Dr. Diabolic Show will premier online via DrDiabolicShow.com on Friday, July 13, and they have additional live appearances scheduled for July 21 at the FilmBar and they will be hosting the free screening of The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension as part of NerdvanaCon at the Aug. 10 Second Friday events.

Everyone in attendance at the debut of  ‘Dr. Diabolic’s Traveling Roadshow & Fun-time Variety Hour‘ on July 6, at the Phoenix Art Museum, will receive a pass good for admission into the NerdvanaCon screening of Buckaroo Banzai on Aug. 10 in downtown Mesa – hosted by Dr. Diabolic and sponsored by Bookmans.
