The Force Awakens

Star Wars: Episode VII — The Force Awakens leads this year’s Saturn Awards field with 15 nominations across many categories including director J.J. Abrams, writing by Abrams, Lawrence Kasdan and Michael Arndt, editing, production design and visual effects.

Other films nominated for annual honors from the nonprofit Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films include Mad Max: Fury Road and Crimson Peak, each with nine nominations. On the smaller screen, AMC’s The Walking Dead received seven nods and HBO’s Game of Thrones earned five.

New developments in the Saturn Awards this year include a YouTube Channel and a category for Best New Media Television Series — the latter of which will come in handy when Star Trek returns in an episodic format on CBS’ All Access streaming service next year.

The academy says the full roster of nominations will be announced March 2. Awards will be presented in June in Burbank, Calif.; John Barrowman will host and Nichelle Nichols will receive The Life Career Award.
