Traci Lords beats Pixar to ‘Mars’

Books Movies Sci-Fi & Fantasy Television

We already know that Pixar is working on John Carter of Mars, a big-screen adaptation of Edgar Rice Burroughs’ pulpy Barsoom tales that began with A Princess of Mars. But with a planned release of 2012, who knows if we’ll ever see it? Especially if they make it a Christmas Day release, which would put it mere days after the Mayan apocalypse …

princessofmarsNever fear! Asylum, the industrious folks behind such bargain-bin knockoffs as Snakes on a Train, Transmorphers and AVH: Alien vs. Hunter, are at it again, cutting Pixar off at the pass with Princess of Mars starring Antonio Sabato Jr. and porn queen turned B-movie maven Traci Lords. According to, the faux flick will be available on DVD on or after Dec. 29.

This bounty of Burroughs is possible because his books, like those of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Jules Verne, are in the public domain (meaning copyright has expired).

The trailer, which you can view on the jump, shows that Asylum isn’t satisfied with simply not having to pay a license fee. They go one step further and tie this to James Cameron’s 3-D epic Avatar — which, it crows, was inspired by the Tarzan author’s extraterrestrial tale.

In the story, Carter, a Civil War veteran who fought for the Confederacy, “dies” in Arizona and awakes on the Red Planet to battle green aliens alongside a beautiful princess named Dejah Thoris.

Pixar’s version, penned by Michael Chabon and directed by Andrew Stanton (Wall-E, Finding Nemo), will star X-Men Origins: Wolverine cast members Taylor Kitsch and Lynn Collins as Carter and Thoris. Willem Defoe will portray the Martian leader Tars Tarkas.
