An Arizona celebration of anime at Saboten Con

Johnny Yong Bosch (Saboten Con)We’re coming up on another of the Valley’s signature pop culture events: Saboten Con, a growing anime convention Sept. 30 to Oct. 2 at Phoenix’s Hilton Squaw Peak Resort off state Route 51 on 16th Street north of Glendale Avenue.

Saboten Con guests include Johnny Yong Bosch (Mighty Morphin Power Rangers’ Black Ranger, pictured), anime voice actors Rob Blatt and Troy Baker and bands Eyeshine, Kazha, Kairu and Kitcho Daiko.

Other convention programming includes an anime music video contest for all ages and adults only, a cosplayer masquerade and contest, a Japanese fashion show and a steampunk ball inspired by the work of filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki.

Full event passes cost $45 through Sept. 29, and $50 at the door. Single-day passes go for $30/$35/$25 for Friday/Saturday/Sunday through Sept. 29 and $35/$40/$30 at the door.
