Nebula Awards

The nominees for the 2012 Nebula Awards, honoring excellence in sci-fi and fantasy writing, have been announced.

Categories include short story, novelette, novella, novel and the Andre Norton Award for Young Adult Science Fiction and Fantasy. You can see the final ballot here.

The screenplay nominees for the prestigious Ray Bradbury Award for Outstanding Dramatic Presentation are The Avengers, Beasts of the Southern Wild, The Cabin in the Woods, The Hunger Games, John Carter and Looper.

Both The Cabin in the Woods and The Avengers were co-written by fan favorite Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Firefly creator Joss Whedon, who also directed The Avengers to popular acclaim.

The much-criticized box-office flop John Carter is an adaptation of Tarzan author Edgar Rice Burroughs’ tales of a man adrift on Mars, and certainly could use some genre love. The screenwriters who adapted it for Disney were Michael Chabom, Mark Andrews and director Andrew Stanton.

Last year’s big winners included fantasy author Neil Gaiman’s first Doctor Who teleplay, “The Doctor’s Wife.” Feature films dominate the Bradbury nominations this time around.

The Nebula winners will be announced May 16-19 at the San Jose Hilton. The honorees are chosen and voted on by the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America, a group that was founded in 1965.
